Description

What it is

Readwise Reader is the read-it-later and reading app from Readwise, Inc. It collects articles, PDFs, EPUBs, email newsletters, RSS feeds, YouTube videos and X (Twitter) threads in one library, where you can read, highlight and annotate them. It is sold together with the original Readwise app, which gathers highlights from over 20 sources such as Kindle, Apple Books and Instapaper and resurfaces them through a Daily Review. Highlights made in Reader sync to Readwise automatically, and one full Readwise subscription covers both apps.

Key features
  • One inbox for reading: save web pages with the browser extension, forward newsletters to a Reader address, follow RSS feeds, and upload PDFs and EPUBs. Triage views sort what to read now, later or never.
  • Highlighting: highlight text, images and tables on any device, add notes and tags, and highlight the open web with the browser extension. YouTube videos come with a transcript you can highlight.
  • Ghostreader: a built-in AI assistant with preset prompts for summarising a document, defining a word, explaining a concept or translating a passage, plus custom prompts you write yourself. On web and desktop, Global Ghostreader searches your whole library and answers with citations that link to the source.
  • Text to speech: listen to any document read by a synthetic voice.
  • Search and offline use: full-text search that also works offline, keyboard-driven reading, and sync across the web, desktop, iOS and Android apps.
  • Daily Review: spaced repetition that resurfaces past highlights by email or in the app.
  • Integrations: highlights export to Obsidian, Notion, Roam Research, Evernote, Logseq and others, and there is a public API, an official CLI and an official remote MCP server that lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other assistants search your highlights and documents.
Who it's for

Heavy readers, researchers, students and writers who read across many formats and want their highlights to reach their notes. It also suits people moving from Pocket or Instapaper who want one app instead of several.

Pricing

As listed on readwise.io in October 2026, Reader comes with a full Readwise subscription at $9.99/month billed annually or $12.99/month billed monthly, after a 30-day free trial that needs no credit card. A cheaper Readwise Lite plan ($5.59/month billed annually) covers only the highlight Daily Review and syncing, not Reader. Readwise offers a 50% discount to students, educators, non-profits, the military, first responders and people in countries where US pricing is not affordable.
