Description
LanguageTool is a writing assistant that checks grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalisation and style, and suggests rephrasings, in English, German, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Dutch and more than 30 other languages. That breadth is its main difference from English-first checkers: it is built for people who write in several languages or in a language that is not their first.
It runs wherever you write. There are desktop apps for Windows and macOS that check text across other applications, browser add-ons for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera, email add-ons for Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail and Thunderbird, and plugins for Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Apple Pages and LibreOffice, plus a web editor. Each issue is flagged inline with a short explanation and one-click fixes.
The checking engine is open source under the LGPL and can be downloaded and self-hosted; the hosted service adds the paraphrasing tool and stronger AI-based checks. A free tier covers basic grammar and spelling, Premium unlocks enhanced grammar, punctuation and style checks and unlimited paraphrasing, and LanguageTool for Business offers GDPR-conform team plans and a proofreading API.
