AI Dungeon

What it is

AI Dungeon is an AI-driven text adventure and interactive-fiction game made by Latitude. You pick a premade or community scenario, or write your own opening, and then co-write the story turn by turn: you say what your character does or says, and the AI narrates what happens next. It runs in the browser at play.aidungeon.com and as iOS and Android apps, is free to play without ads, and has been on the App Store since December 2019.

Key features

• Four input modes: Do (an action), Say (dialogue), Story (write narration directly) and See (generate an image of the moment), with Continue, Retry, Erase and rewind for any turn.
• Story memory: AI Instructions, a Story Summary, Plot Essentials, Author's Notes and relevant Story Cards (lore entries for characters, places and things) are combined with the adventure text for each turn, and a Memory Bank keeps context to bring back when it becomes relevant (25 memories on the free tier, up to 800 on Ultimate).
• Choice of models: a picker of story models (for example Muse, Wayfarer, DeepSeek and Hermes), which Latitude says include its own custom-trained fine-tunes for role-play; higher tiers unlock more powerful models and longer context.
• Scenarios and community: create scenarios with story cards and share them, or play thousands written by other players across fantasy, sci-fi, horror, romance and more.
• Multiplayer and scripting: adventure with friends in a shared session, and add scripts to a scenario to change how it behaves.
• Image generation: create images of characters and scenes with credits.

Who it's for

Players who enjoy tabletop-style role-play and choose-your-own-adventure stories, and writers who want to improvise fiction collaboratively with an AI and build reusable worlds. It is a game first: it does not manage manuscripts, outlines or export the way a novel-writing app does.

Free tier with no ads. Paid memberships, as listed in AI Dungeon's guidebook in October 2026, in USD per month, add context length, memories, models and monthly credits:

• Wanderer: free, up to 4k tokens of context, 25 memories.
• Journey: $14.99, 760 credits, 8k context, 100 memories.
• Legend: $29.99, 1,650 credits, 16k context, 200 memories.
• Mythic: $49.99, 2,750 credits, 32k context, 400 memories.
• Ultimate: $99.99, 5,200 credits, 32k context, 800 memories.

Six- and twelve-month subscriptions are discounted, Journey and Legend include a one-week trial, and separate Shadow Tiers offer the most powerful models at higher context.
