Description
Character.AI is a platform for talking to AI personas rather than to a single assistant. Users create characters by writing a description, greeting, and example dialogue, and the community has produced millions of them: tutors, language partners, interview coaches, fictional companions, historical figures, and an enormous amount of collaborative fiction.
How it works
- Create a character with a name, description, and personality — no code, and public or private
- Chat with any character, with memory that persists across sessions
- Rooms put several characters in one conversation, which is how a lot of collaborative storytelling happens
- Voices let characters speak, and community-made voices can be attached to any persona
- Rate and branch replies to steer a character toward the responses you want
What it is actually used for
A large share of usage is entertainment and companionship, but the format works well for practice too — rehearsing a language, running a mock interview, or working through a subject with a patient tutor persona. Free to use, with a paid tier for faster responses and early features. The service applies content filters and has age requirements.
