Meta AI is Meta's general-purpose assistant, powered by its Llama model family. It answers questions, drafts and rewrites text, reasons through problems, and generates and edits images — and unusually for an assistant of this scale, it is free to use.

Where it lives

Its real distribution advantage is that it is already inside the apps people use. You can talk to it at meta.ai in a browser, or summon it inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook without installing anything new, which makes it the assistant many people reach for first simply because it is already there.

What it does well

• Everyday question answering with web-grounded results
• Image generation and editing from natural-language prompts
• Writing help — summaries, rewrites, tone changes, brainstorming
• Group-chat use inside messaging apps, where it can answer a question for everyone at once

Worth knowing

Availability of individual features varies by country, and the assistant is tuned for consumer use rather than developer control. If you want the underlying models on your own terms, the Llama weights are published separately for self-hosting and fine-tuning.
