Description
What it is
Leo is the AI assistant built into the Brave browser, made by Brave Software. You open it from the address bar by typing a question and choosing "Ask Leo", or from the Leo icon in the toolbar or sidebar. It answers questions on its own or about the page, document or video you have open. It is available in Brave on macOS, Windows and Linux, and in the Android and iOS apps. Nothing extra needs to be installed.
Key features
- Chat with the current tab: summarize a page, translate or analyze text, or draft articles, essays and emails without leaving the tab. You can mention other open tabs with @ in the prompt.
- Documents: Brave says Leo can analyze PDFs, Google Docs and Google Sheets.
- Brave Search grounding: Leo can run Brave Search to bring in recent information and shows the sources it used.
- Tab organization: group the tabs for one topic, or gather them into a new window.
- History and memory: chat history is stored locally on the device, and temporary chats are deleted when you close them. You can also set preferences that Leo remembers across chats.
- Bring Your Own Model (BYOM): connect a local model, a remote model or a third-party API in place of Brave's hosted models.
- Models: according to Brave's FAQ, both the free and Premium tiers include models from Mixtral, Anthropic's Claude and Meta's Llama. The exact versions are listed inside Leo.
- Voice input on iOS and help with code and database queries.
Privacy
Brave says Leo does not keep or share chats and does not use them to train models, and that the free version needs no account or login. For each request the browser sends the latest prompt, the current conversation and, when needed, context from the page. Brave says it does not collect identifiers that can be linked to you, such as your IP address. Premium needs an account only to check the subscription, and Brave says that account cannot be linked to how you use Leo. Like any LLM, Leo can hallucinate, and Brave advises double-checking its answers.
Who it's for
Leo suits Brave users who want an assistant inside the browser for summarizing, translating and asking questions about pages, without a separate chatbot account. People who run their own models can use BYOM and keep the same interface.
Pricing
Leo is free to use. When traffic is high, the free tier may be less available. Leo Premium adds more models, faster responses, higher rate limits and early access to new features. As listed on brave.com/premium in October 2026, it costs $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year and comes with a 7-day free trial.
