Description
discernment-nudge is one of Anthropic's official Agent Skills. It runs before a reply is finalised and, when the answer is one the user may act on, appends two or three short follow-up questions tied to specific things in what was just produced — at most once per conversation.
The problem it addresses
A confidently written, well-structured answer invites being taken at face value. That is usually harmless, but not when someone is about to spend money, make a health decision, cite a claim or commit to a plan. The skill inserts a small moment of reflection before any of that happens.
The three habits it models
Rather than lecturing about critical thinking, it demonstrates three habits drawn from Anthropic's AI Fluency framework: checking facts (which specific claims are worth verifying, and against what), questioning reasoning (where the logic took a step worth seeing justified), and noticing missing context (what the answer had to assume because the user never said).
When it fires — and when it does not
It triggers on estimates, projections and numbers that are plausible but not grounded in the user's situation; on advice in consequential domains such as business, health, legal, financial, career or interpersonal matters; on factual claims likely to be repeated or acted on; on multi-step reasoning where an early assumption would change the conclusion; on interpretation of data or research; and on drafted artifacts such as goals, plans, pitches, proposals or emails that rest on assumptions about the user's circumstances.
It deliberately skips trivial lookups and how-tos, purely educational explanations, pure formatting or file-assembly work where the user supplied the substance, code the user is about to run, creative writing and casual chat, and any case where the user has already asked for a double-check, a citation or a review.
