Praktika attacks the part of language learning that flashcard apps leave alone: actually talking. Instead of tapping through translation exercises, you hold spoken conversations with an animated AI tutor that listens, responds, and corrects pronunciation, grammar and word choice in the moment.

The avatar premise

The tutors are built as characters rather than voices — each with a backstory, a region and a matching accent (American, British, Latin American and others), so learners can pick a coach whose speech patterns match what they need to understand. Alisha teaches inclusive US English, Alejandro switches between Spanish and English from a Barcelona perspective, Marco drills professional register for interviews. Learners can change tutors at any time.

The pedagogical argument for this is straightforward: the biggest obstacle for most adult learners is the fear of speaking badly in front of a person. An avatar removes the audience while keeping the conversational pressure.

Languages and content

Twelve languages: English, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, French, Portuguese (European and Brazilian), Italian, German, Arabic, Russian and Chinese. Over a thousand lessons span exam preparation (IELTS, TOEFL), travel, career tracks, everyday life and slang, alongside free-form conversation on any topic. Beginners can receive instruction in their native language, and feedback intensity is adjustable between soft, balanced and strict.

Multimodal practice

The more distinctive feature is uploading your own material into a session — a photo of your surroundings to practise vocabulary, a PDF, a voice note, or your own résumé to rehearse an interview and get pronunciation coaching on it. That is closer to what a private tutor does than to what a course app does.

Progress and cost

Speaking metrics, streaks and in-app challenges track fluency over time. Free to download on iOS and Android; the full tutor experience runs about $8 per month, which Praktika positions against roughly $400 a month for private tutoring. The company reports over 30 million learners and a 4.8 App Store rating from more than 1.2 million ratings.
