Freebuff

Freebuff is a set of AI coding tools given away free and paid for by text ads rather than a subscription. The pitch is aimed squarely at developers who have hit the ceiling of a Claude Code, Cursor or Codex plan and do not want a second one: there is no card, no API key to supply and no seat to buy.

What is in the suite

• Freebuff CLI — a terminal coding agent installed with npm install -g freebuff, in the same shape as the CLI agents it is positioned against.
• Freebuff Desktop — a macOS, Windows and Linux app that runs several coding agents in parallel, each in its own isolated workspace, with a queue, diff review, preview, terminal and notes panel around them.
• Freebuff Web — a prompt-to-app builder with managed agentic hosting, so a generated full-stack app deploys without separate infrastructure.
• Cloud IDE — connects to a GitHub repository and gives you an editor, terminal and sandbox in the browser.
• Chat — a free general assistant with a deeper research mode.

Models

Freebuff routes to hosted frontier and open-weight models rather than asking you to bring your own key; the site currently advertises DeepSeek V4 Flash at no cost alongside GPT 5.6 Luna. Because the models are chosen and paid for by Freebuff, the available roster moves — treat the named models as a snapshot rather than a contract.

The trade-off worth understanding

The business model is advertising. That is stated plainly in the FAQ, and it is the thing to weigh before pointing it at a private codebase: free-to-you means the economics run on ad inventory and, implicitly, scale. Read the terms if you work under a client NDA. For side projects, learning, prototyping and throwaway spikes — the cases where a paid seat is hardest to justify — the calculus is much simpler.
