GitLab Duo

What it is

GitLab Duo is the set of AI features built into GitLab, the DevSecOps platform. Its current core is the GitLab Duo Agent Platform, which became generally available in GitLab 18.8. Instead of only completing code in an editor, it runs AI agents and multi-step "flows" against your GitLab projects, using issues, merge requests, pipelines and security findings as context. It works on GitLab.com, GitLab Self-Managed and GitLab Dedicated.

Key features

• Agentic Chat: answers questions about your projects and can create and edit files, in the GitLab UI and in your editor.
• Code Suggestions: inline completions and code generation as you type.
• Built-in agents: a Planner agent for planning and prioritising work, and a Data Analyst agent for development metrics.
• Flows: chained agents for multi-step jobs. Examples are turning an issue into a merge request, automated code review, converting legacy pipelines to GitLab CI/CD, and diagnosing and fixing a failing pipeline.
• Custom and external agents: build team-specific agents and share them through the AI Catalog. On Premium and Ultimate you can also connect external agents; GitLab names Claude Code and Codex as examples.
• MCP in both directions: agents can pull context from your tools, and coding agents can call into GitLab.
• GitLab Orbit: a context graph that links code, merge requests, pipelines and deployments, which Duo agents query automatically.
• Governance: admins choose which agents, flows and models are allowed. Each agent action is traced to a real user's identity. Self-Managed instances can run self-hosted models.

GitLab says it does not train generative models on private customer data.

Where it runs

GitLab's web UI and Web IDE, plus extensions for VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio, Eclipse and Neovim, and the GitLab Duo CLI.

Who it's for

Teams that already use GitLab for source control and CI/CD and want AI help with planning, review, security triage and pipeline fixes, not only with writing code. It suits organisations that need audit trails or self-hosted models.

Pricing

Duo Agent Platform is billed in GitLab Credits, pooled across an organisation, with spend caps by subscription, group or user. As listed on GitLab's pricing page and docs in October 2026:

• Free ($0): agent features are available only after buying GitLab Credits.
• Premium ($29 per user/month, billed annually) and Ultimate (custom pricing): include a monthly per-user allotment of credits.
• Additional credits: a monthly commitment pool with tiered discounts, or on-demand usage at a list price of $1 per credit. How fast credits are used depends on the model behind each request.

Temporary 30-day evaluation credits can be requested. The older GitLab Duo Pro and Enterprise add-ons are not usage-billed.
