Description
What it is
Continue is an open-source AI coding assistant that runs as a VS Code extension, a JetBrains plugin and a command-line tool (cn). You connect it to the model of your choice, hosted or local. In June 2026 the Continue website was replaced with a notice that Continue was acquired by Cursor. The project's GitHub README now says the continuedev/continue repository "is no longer actively maintained and is read-only for all users". The team shipped a final release of the VS Code extension, CLI and JetBrains plugin that, according to the README, removed anonymous telemetry and pulled out authentication. The source code remains available under the Apache 2.0 licence.
Key features
According to the documentation at docs.continue.dev:
- Agent mode, which works through development tasks with you, plus Chat for questions about your code
- Edit, which rewrites a selected block without leaving the file you are in
- Autocomplete, with inline suggestions as you type
- Continue CLI (`cn`) for AI coding help in the terminal
- Configuration in
config.yaml: models, rules, prompts and MCP servers - Guides for running with Ollama, self-hosting a model and working without an internet connection
Status after the acquisition
The hosted side of Continue is gone. The acquisition notice has FAQ entries on data and subscriptions, and press coverage of the deal (The New Stack, June 2026) reported a data-export deadline of July 15 and that recurring billing had been switched off. The extension is still listed on the VS Code Marketplace and Open VSX, and the CLI is still on npm. They still work with your own model keys, but no further fixes or updates are planned, and the README now recommends the CLI over the JetBrains plugin.
Who it's for
Developers who already use Continue and want to keep a self-configured, bring-your-own-model setup, and teams that want to fork a mature open-source coding agent as a starting point. Anyone choosing a new tool should expect to maintain it themselves, or should look at actively developed alternatives.
Pricing
The final extensions, CLI and source code are free under Apache 2.0. Any model costs depend on the provider you connect. Continue's paid hosted plans have been discontinued, so there is nothing left to buy from Continue as of October 2026.
