Black Forest Labs
Summary
The lab behind FLUX — open and commercial image models used across much of the generative design ecosystem.
Description
Black Forest Labs builds the FLUX family of image models. Founded by researchers who worked on the original latent diffusion and Stable Diffusion work, the lab has become the default choice for teams that want state-of-the-art image generation they can actually deploy.
Why FLUX is everywhere
- Prompt adherence. FLUX follows complex instructions more reliably than most alternatives, including text rendered inside images — historically the hardest thing to get right.
- Open weights alongside commercial tiers. Open variants can be self-hosted and fine-tuned; hosted pro and ultra tiers cover production quality and speed. That combination is why FLUX shows up inside so many other products.
- Editing, not just generation. In-context editing models take an input image and a natural-language instruction and change only what you asked for, which is far more useful in real workflows than regenerating from scratch.
- LoRA ecosystem. A large community of fine-tunes for specific styles, products, and characters.
Access
Use the models through the BFL API directly, through partner inference platforms, or self-host the open weights. Pricing is per generation, with credits available for evaluation. If you are building anything that makes images, this is the model family to benchmark against.
